MORE HUMANITY

People, businesses and churches from the Hamden/North Haven/New Haven area have started a new habitat venture called “Sleeping Giant Build”

Their Mission?

To bring together people of all backgrounds, races and religions to build homes in the greater New Haven area side by side with deserving families in need of affordable housing.

How does it work?

Through volunteer labor and donations of money and materials, Sleeping Giant Build (S.G.B)  builds and rehabilitates simple, decent houses with the help of the homeowner (partner) families. Habitat houses are sold to partner families at no profit and financed with affordable loans. The homeowners’ monthly mortgage payments are used to build still more Habitat houses.

Habitat is not a giveaway program. In addition to a down payment and the monthly mortgage payments, homeowners invest hundreds of hours of their own labor — sweat equity — into building their Habitat house and the houses of others.  Family selection is based upon a nondiscriminatory policy; neither race nor religion is a factor in choosing the families who receive these houses.

How can you help?

The most important need at the moment for S.G.B. is financial donations and premier sponsorship. A build requires a financial commitment of at least $50,000 before construction can begin. S.G.B. current pledge total stands at $20,000.

Donations can be made in the form or cash, or in the form of donated materials or skilled labor. Donations of cash or materials are tax-deductible.

If you wish to contribute please make check payable to:

Premier Sponsors are still being sought.
"Premier Sponsors" are organizations within the Greater New Haven area that are willing to contribute $2,500 or more and provide volunteers for the actual builds. Many businesses are attracted to sponsorships because it provides them a opportunity to showcase their business while at the same time helping the local community. Each sponsor is prominently featured in all S.G.B. activities and events as well as being publicized to the participating volunteers, civic and religious organizations.
