Who is Sleeping Giant Build?
Sleeping Giant Build supports Habitat for Humanity of Greater New Haven’s mission to eliminate poverty housing by providing home ownership opportunities for low-income working families in the Greater New Haven area.
In addition to its own fundraising efforts, Sleeping Giant Build partners with local businesses, religious organizations, civic groups, and individuals to raise the $50,000 required to build a Habitat for Humanity Home. Many partners also donate their time to help build the homes.
What is Habitat for Humanity’s Role?
Through a rigorous process, Habitat for Humanity of Greater New Haven selects the future partner families (homeowners). After selection, the partner family must meet additional requirements including completion of a homebuyer education program and 400 hours of “sweat equity” to help complete their home or the home of another Habitat family.
Habitat for Humanity of Greater New Haven also provides the infrastructure needed to acquire the land for the home, blueprints for the house, construction supervision, tools, equipment, and professional services that general volunteers cannot provide.
What happens when construction is complete?
When construction is complete, there is a joyous dedication ceremony and partner families become homeowners! The home is financed through a 25-year, zero percent interest mortgage. Partner families draw on the information learned in their homebuyer education program to become successful homeowners.
